Sales job experience 'may not be essential'

It may be possible to gain a sales job without a background in the sector, one expert claims.

Kurosh Kiana, customer service manager for ClickAJob, told Online Recruitment magazine that employers are willing to be flexible if it appears that a candidate has transferable skills.

He asserted: "Though you may be trained in one area, techniques and working practices you have picked up day-to-day may qualify you for other things as well."

Mr Kiana was speaking after a study from the government's Training and Development Agency for Schools found that organisations may be interested in applicants with varied employment backgrounds.

A pattern of switching jobs could suggest that a candidate is well-equipped for a sales job in London or elsewhere.

Meanwhile, the Learning and Skills Council is currently promoting the benefits of apprenticeships to organisations that may not otherwise consider them.

The council's director of apprenticeships, Stephen Gardner, said that such initiatives can be suited to a wide range of sectors.
