Graduate sales workers 'hard to retain'

Graduate sales workers may be difficult to retain, with new research indicating that employees who are just beginning their careers are one of the groups firms find it most difficult to keep.

According to research conducted by MRINetwork, staff who are just entering the world of work, along with experienced workers approaching the end of their careers, are the most likely to leave a firm.

"Some HR managers refer to younger workers as 'hummingbirds' because they so often move from job to job," stated Michael Jalbert, president of MRINetwork.

He went on to recommend a number of ways in which firms can encourage loyalty among younger staff members, including providing flexible work schedules and performance-based bonus schemes.

Meanwhile, Peter Carroll, associate director of the Work Foundation, recently told Personnel Today that companies should try to avoid cutting staff benefits as this may lead to the alienation of their employees.
