Smaller firms 'may benefit from internship scheme'
By John Oak
The government has announced plans to make internships available for those claiming jobseekers allowance, it has been revealed.
Elspeth Farrar, vice president for the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services, commented that the plan is likely to assist smaller companies that would not normally have the capacity or the financial support to take on interns.
She added: "The small and medium enterprise market is possibly going to be a really good market, as they are an area where few of them would have structured internship programmes running anyway."
Ms Farrar went on to say that the scheme will only work if participating employers can find the additional capacity within their organisations to plan and manage meaningful internships.
The positions are being created through the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, which comments that the plan will assist more graduates in kick-starting their careers by gaining the skills and experience they need to get through an internship.
