Graduate sales jobs 'need to be preserved'
Companies should look to hire recent university leavers, according to one expert, who said that graduates bring benefits to sales jobs that cannot be found elsewhere.
Chris Morrall, recruitment management specialist at Talent Transitions, said that graduates are a long-term investment for companies willing to take the plunge and give them a sales job.
He said: "There are benefits to hiring a graduate and if people are seeing and realising those benefits then it should be the start of other things to come."
Mr Morrall was commenting after BT announced that it is suspending its graduate recruitment scheme due to the recession.
For many companies, it does not make sense to follow BT's lead, according to Mr Morrall.
Graduate sales jobs could actually be on the rise at some companies, according to the recruitment specialist, who said some organisations will look to increase their recruitment of university leavers.
The Office for National Statistics recently found that the employment rate for people of working age was 72.7 per cent in the three months to June 2009, down 0.9 percentage points on the previous three months.
