Sales jobs candidates 'should use year out wisely'

Sales jobs candidates who are taking a year out before starting work should use the time getting skills to help them in employment.

David Way, deputy chief executive of the National Apprenticeship Service, told the Financial Mail that people on a gap year can do a lot to boost their employability.

He advised candidates for sales jobs to use their time wisely so that they gain an advantage on others who have taken time out.

"As well as the cultural experience, you will gain new skills, make new contacts and have an interesting subject to discuss in job interviews," Mr Way added.

One option for sales jobs candidates is to work for half a year in a relevant industry and travel for the remainder of the time.

Those heading on a gap year can also learn an extra language while away, as advised by Teresa Tinsley, director of communications at the National Centre for Languages.

The expert said that it can boost employability and give the candidate the chance to work internationally.
