Scotland launches worker health drive
A new initiative will help those seeking sales jobs and other positions in Scotland experience less ill health.
Scottish health secretary Nicola Sturgeon unveiled the £1.5 million Fit for Work Service, which will provide those of working age with a rapid diagnosis and referral for common physical and mental health conditions.
The scheme aims to cut the amount of time that people spend out of work, following estimates that ill health costs the UK around £100 billion each year in lost tax, welfare spending and lost productivity.
Ms Sturgeon commented: "The health of Scotland's working age population is key to the wellbeing of both individuals and communities and to the future economic success of Scotland."
She also pointed out that the scheme can be further supported if companies implement proactive health and wellbeing workplace policies.
Last month, the Department for Work and Pensions launched the new £4 million Health Work and Wellbeing Challenge Fund, which is aimed at small and medium-sized employers.
The fund will finance projects to provide healthy activities to staff, improve work/life balances and reduce stress.
