Apprenticeships 'should give people transferable skills'

Apprenticeships should teach youngsters the necessary skills to make them successful in sales recruitment, according to an industry body.

Steve Sutcliffe, communications manager at the apprenticeship firm League Football Education (LFE), said that suitable placements should give people skills which can be used in different industries.

The LFE currently offers training and opportunities to young aspiring footballers, to ensure that they have useful experience and skills in case they do not make it in sport or for their future careers.

"One of the key things for employers and for those going on to an apprenticeship is that there is a structured programme in place. This cannot be understated as those who are enjoying their work are more likely to learn and achieve," added Mr Sutcliffe.

Last week, business secretary Lord Mandelson set out his vision for giving people and sales recruitment professionals the skills they need to help drive economic growth.

This included a dramatic expansion of apprenticeships which would create 35,000 new places over the next two years.
