Employers want students to learn Chinese

Irish employers believe that business relations with the Asia could be improved if students learn Chinese.

The Irish Independent reported that a third of employers think that Mandarin Chinese should be on junior and leaving curriculum. Furthermore, three-quarters think organising Chinese cultural activities will help to promote the language in Ireland.

Research undertaken by the Chinese studies department at University College Dublin showed that almost 13 per cent of all secondary schools in the UK provide Mandarin teaching.

However, only six schools in Ireland have run teaching programmes in the language.

A further study by the university revealed that nine out of ten employers think that information about Chinese business practices is essential for doing well in the country.

Earlier this year, language experts Thames Translations said that being able to speak in another tongue is an excellent way for young people to get ahead in their career.
