NUS applauds chancellor's career boost for graduates
The National Union of Students (NUS) has applauded chancellor Alistair Darling's announcement which could boost sales recruitment prospects for graduates.
In his pre-Budget report, the chancellor announced more financial support for 10,000 low-income undergraduates to help them carry out internships in different professions, giving their career hopes a boost.
Wes Streeting, NUS president, said that the body was "delighted" that the government has adopted proposals to provide support to poorer students to help their job prospects after graduation.
"Students are graduating with record levels of debt and the current shortage of graduate jobs is making it particularly difficult for those who cannot rely on their family to support them when they leave university," he added.
In an effort to get more people into sales jobs, under-24 year olds will also be guaranteed training or employment after six months out of work, rather than the current 12 months.
In the pre-Budget report, Chancellor Darling said that he wanted to promote growth in the UK, without "wrecking" recovery from the recession.
