Graduate jobs cut 'has failed to materialise'
The dramatic graduate job cuts predicted last summer have failed to materialise, sales recruitment hopefuls have been told.
Carl Gilleard, chief executive of the Association of Graduate Recruiters, said that vacancies in 2009 fell by 8.9 per cent, rather than the 24.9 per cent which was touted.
He added that these figures compared favourably with employment statistics overall, suggesting that graduate recruitment is emerging from the recession relatively unscathed.
"Today's survey suggests that the graduate employment market is starting to normalise and to begin the process of recovery. A small decrease following a large one the year before is consistent with previous trends and, by 2011, we could be seeing vacancy increases for the first time since 2008," he added.
He told people looking for graduate sales jobs that while vacancy figures are starting to turn the corner, it might be some time before salaries follow suit.
Graduate job hunters also received further good news recently, with the news that the number of permanent staff placements grew for the sixth consecutive month in January, according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and KPMG.
