Second language 'beneficial for sales jobs'

Having a second language on a CV might put a sales recruitment hopeful at a distinct advantage, according to an expert.

Teresa Tinsley, director of communications at CILT, the National Centre for Languages, said that having a working knowledge of a foreign tongue is just as important as being good at maths, science and ICT.

According to a new study undertaken by CILT in partnership with the Try Life in another language campaign, French, German and Spanish skills are still in demand by employers.

"It is going to be much more important to have a second language in the future than it has been in the past. If you look at the sort of world that young people are growing up to live in, it's much more international than in the past, there's many more multinational [and] foreign-owned companies," added Ms Tinsley.

She also commented that increased competition will see sales recruitment hopefuls with language skills come to the top.
