NUS welcomes additional university places

Around 20,000 extra university places have been promised by the government, which could help people graduate into sales jobs in the future.

Chancellor Alistair Darling revealed the move in the 2010 Budget, although the National Union of Students (NUS) did warn that for the scheme to work, funding must be secured and student loans and grants must be met by the government.

NUS president Wes Streeting said that, with record demand for places, he welcomed this urgent announcement for additional spots.

"The creation of additional student numbers for science, technology and maths will help to ensure that many students with the ability and aspiration to benefit from higher education will not be left out in the cold this autumn," he added.

Another boost from the Budget for people looking for sales jobs was the extension of the guarantee to 16 and 17-year-olds that they will receive education or training if they have been unemployed for six months or more.
