The UK's graduate jobs market is predicted to be stable this year as companies take on skilled university leavers to boost their operations, it has been claimed.

UK firms expect more graduates

The nation's employers except to see a rise in the number of people applying for graduate jobs this year, according to new study.

A survey carried out by High Fliers Research, which analysed the graduate job market, found that employers expect to hire 6.4 per cent more university leavers in summer 2012 than they did last year, with nearly half of all firms taking on more graduates.

However, the research also shows that people leaving university this summer will be competing with previous graduates, as one in three 2012 applications will be from people who graduated in 2011 or earlier.

This means it is vital to have an edge over other recruitment hopefuls, noted Martin Birchall, managing director at High Fliers Research, who said having work experience is the key to landing a job.

"New graduates who've not had any work experience at all during their time at university have little hope of landing a well-paid job with a leading employer, irrespective of the academic results they achieve or the university they've attended," he added.
